Sumitomo Electric Industries' selection of Mold Finish Master SUMIDIA Binderless ballnose endmills, featuring nano-polycrystalline diamonds (NPD) in the cutting edge, has now been extended by new models and a new series offering cutting tools in additional sizes. A newly-developed indexable insert (37 models) was also launched on the market in October 2015.

Sumitomo Electric developed the first cutting tool — a ballnose endmill — having a cutting edge using NPD, which consists of minute nano-sized diamond particles directly and solidly bonded together. In October 2014, the company launched three models — with cutting-tool radius sizes of R0.3, R0.5 and R1.0 respectively — in its NPDB series of carbide-blank turning tools. In October 2015, the selection was extended by two new models with cutting-tool radius sizes of R0.1 and R0.2. The brand-new NPDBS series of standard-finishing cutting tools, comprising five models with cutting-tool radius sizes ranging from R0.1 to R1.0, was launched at the same time. Yet another new product also launched on this occasion was the indexable insert (37 models).

Characteristics

NPD are generated from graphitic carbon material under extremely high pressure and high temperatures, using special manufacturing technology. The minute, nano-sized diamond particles are bonded strongly and directly, without the use of binder materials. As a result, they are harder than single-crystal diamonds, and are also free of the cleavage feature that is the weakness of the single-crystal diamond. This means that NPD have higher wear-resistance than conventional polycrystalline diamonds (PCD). When used in endmills and indexable inserts for machining carbide blanks and other items made from hard and brittle materials, NPD deliver excellent machined surface quality and high precision; they also enable consistently high quality and precision to be maintained over long periods.
