Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (head office: Chuo-ku, Osaka, President: Osamu Inoue) has developed and launched the "SEC-External Holders with Internal Coolant Supply" as of October 2021.

Coolant, a cooling medium which suppresses heat generated by the tools during cutting, plays an important role in improving chip evacuation, extending tool life, and improving machining quality. In recent years, as more machine tools support high-pressure coolant supply, it is expected to enhance the effectiveness of the coolant; however, one issue is the difficulty of supplying coolant stably to the machining point through a nozzle.

In order to resolve this issue, our company has developed and launched the SEC-External Holders with Internal Coolant Supply. These holders use a through-clamp coolant supply method from the rake face, enabling consistent coolant supply at close range to the cutting edge and machining point. In addition, the uniquely designed coolant path also minimises fluid loss, further enhancing flow speed during coolant discharge which significantly improves chip evacuation. Combined with coolant supply from the flank, this effectively cools the cutting edge and extends tool life. These effects constitute a major contribution to higher-efficiency external turning and cost reduction.

1. Features

・Excellent chip control improves productivity
A through-clamp coolant supply from the rake face is used, supplying coolant from close range to the cutting edge. In addition, the internal coolant path which minimises fluid loss, enables high-pressure coolant to be supplied between chips and tool rake face at consistently high pressure, keeping the cutting chips fine and achieves excellent chip evacuation.

・High cooling effect suppresses cutting edge damage and extends tool life as well as increasing machining efficiency
In addition to coolant supply from the rake face, coolant supply from a second coolant hole near the insert flank efficiently cools the cutting edge which significantly reduces tool wear thus increasing machining efficiency and extending the life of the insert.

・Realises high rigidity and excellent indexing accuracy through double clamp system
The clamp plate, which also supplies the coolant, uses a double clamp system to firmly hold the insert in place for stable machining. In addition, the indexing accuracy is higher compared to the lever lock system, suppressing cutting edge position shift during insert indexing.
