Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (Head office: Chuo-ku, Osaka, President: Osamu Inoue; hereafter "our company") has developed and launched the "FF Type Chipbreaker", a fine finishing chipbreaker for G-class positive inserts, for sale from November 2022.

Issues with chip control are common in fine finishing of the small-diameter precision parts used in the automotive, electronic components and medical industries among others, causing increasing demands for tools that realise stable machining.

In response to these needs, our company has developed the "FF Type Chipbreaker", a fine finishing chipbreaker for G-class positive inserts which notably enhances chip evacuation in the fine finishing regions of turning in order to realise stable cutting.

1. Features

(1) Excellent chip evacuation in fine finishing applications
Optimised chipbreaker* geometry design (protrusion, pocket, etc.) for fine finishing, has greatly improved chip evacuation, especially in application regions with depths of cut of 0.5mm or less. This prevents issues such as chips entangling with work pieces or tools, which are common to these application regions where chips tend to elongate. In addition to alloy steel, the chipbreaker is also applicable to various work materials including carbon steel and stainless steel.

(2) High chip evacuation performance even in variable depths of cut machining
The chipbreaker design also works to stably curl chips even under fluctuating cutting conditions and provides high chip control performance, especially in variable depths of cut machining where chip control tends to be unstable. Stable profiling and taper machining, often used in small-diameter precision parts machining on autolathes, can also be realised.

(3) Lineup of 3 insert grades to support a wide range of work materials
In addition to AC1030U, which offers an optimal high-quality cutting edge for small-diameter precision parts machining and excellent machined surface quality over a wide range of work materials such as steel and stainless steel, the lineup also includes AC5015S and AC5025S, ideal for the machining of exotic alloys such as heat-resistant alloys, and hardened steel which is now in increasing demand. Achieving high chip control performance and long tool life.
