Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (head office: Chuo-ku, Osaka, President: Osamu Inoue, hereafter "our company") has developed and launched for sale as of September, the "SL type Chipbreaker", a low cutting resistance G-class chipbreaker for positive inserts to be used on small lathes.

When machining small-diameter precision components used in the automotive, electronic, and medical industries among others, high machining quality is often required depending on the application; and there is an increasing need for tools that can suppress burrs*1, chatter*2, and machined surface defects across a wide range of cutting conditions to achieve high-quality machining.

In response to these needs, we have developed the "SL type chipbreaker", a 3D chipbreaker for G-class positive inserts*3 for small product machining, which realises high machining quality through excellent cutting edge sharpness in the finishing to medium cutting regions of turning applications.

The addition of the "SL type chipbreaker" to the lineup of 3D chipbreakers for G-class positive inserts contributes to the elimination of various machining problems. Along with the currently available "SI type chipbreaker" (our first recommendation for small product machining with excellent and stable chip control), "FF type chipbreaker" (which greatly enhances chip control in fine finishing and realises stable cutting), and "SC type chipbreaker" (with excellent fracture resistance for cutting in difficult conditions), this expanded lineup enables the selection of an ideal chipbreaker depending on the application, by responding to the the various needs and providing solutions for small product machining.

1. Features

(1) Excellent cutting edge sharpness, contributing to higher machining quality across a wide application range
Consisting of a protrusion which controls chips with a smooth flow through a wide range of cutting conditions, and a sharp cutting edge shape that enables low-resistance cutting in depths-of-cut of 3.0mm or less. Therefore, preventing machining troubles such as burrs, chatter, machined surface defects, and poor machining accuracy, which are prevalent in small product machining and realising high machining quality.

(2) Cutting edge design realising smooth engagement
The SL type chipbreaker is designed to reduce the load on the cutting edge when engaging the workpiece through an optimised protrusion shape along with a cutting edge that is inclined at a large angle. This produces good cutting performance in machining which involves multiple tool engagements with the workpiece and also vibratory cutting.

(3) Lineup includes 3 turning grades to cover a variety of work materials
In addition to AC1030U, which offers a high-quality cutting edge ideal for small-diameter precision parts machining and achieves excellent machined surface quality on various work materials such as steel and stainless steel; the lineup also includes AC5015S and AC5025S, ideal for the machining of hard-to-cut materials such as heat-resistant alloy and high-hardness materials, which are now in increasing demand, exhibiting a balance of excellent chip control and long tool life.

*1 Burrs
Extraneous parts that protrude from the edges of the product during the machining process.

*2 Chatter
Vibration generated between the tool and the workpiece during machining. Likely to occur when the equipment, work material, or tool has low rigidity or the cutting resistance is high.

*3 Chipbreaker
Grooves or barriers at the cutting tip to control chips generated during machining.
