Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (Head office: Chuo-ku, Osaka, President: Osamu Inoue, hereafter "our company") has developed the new coated cermet grade T2100Z, realizing high stability and long tool life in finish turning of steel, launched for sale as of December 2025.
Cermet has a low affinity with iron due to its main component of a titanium compound, and can produce a beautiful, glossy surface finish when machining ferrous metals. Furthermore, it minimises the use of tungsten, a scarce resource, leading to higher demand in keeping with the growing interest in sustainable manufacturing in recent years.
However, cermets have an inherent material problem of poor fracture resistance, our company has thus re-examined the alloy structure and developed a new cermet alloy with significantly improved toughness. The combination of this new cermet alloy with a high-adhesion strength coating technology realizes stable finishing and long tool life. With a comprehensive lineup of 447 items, we can support a wide range of diverse machining needs.
Our company will continue to further enhance our technological capabilities in order to provide our customers with ideal solutions.
