Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (head office: Chuo-ku, Osaka, President: Osamu Inoue, hereafter "our company") has expanded the Indexable Drill SumiDrill™ WDX series lineup and developed the M Type chipbreaker specialized for stainless steel drilling, launched for sale as of March 2021.
Since its launch, the SumiDrill™ WDX Type has been well received as an indexable drill that provides stable and high-quality drilling of metal components. Our company has further expanded the product lineup and developed the M Type Chipbreaker specialized for stainless steel drilling.
Stainless steel has a wide range of applications due to its excellent properties such as corrosion and thermal resistance, with demand growing every year. However, stainless steel drilling involves problems such as unstable tool life due to the difficulty of chip evacuation and damage to the machined surface caused by evacuated chips. With regard to machining tools, demands are on the rise for improved machining stability, cost reduction through longer life, and higher-quality machined surfaces.
In response to these needs, the M Type Chipbreaker, launched in March 2021, combines a new design concept of chipbreaker shape for smooth chip evacuation along with ACM300, a grade for stainless steel machining. This realises excellent machining stability, longer tool life, and machined surface quality under a wide range of conditions from 5D deep drilling to lathe machining and more. It can be applied to various drilling of stainless steel in fields including automobiles, shipbuilding, and industrial machinery.
