Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (head office: Chuo-ku, Osaka, President: Osamu Inoue, hereafter "our company") has developed and launched the high-efficiency shoulder milling cutter SEC-WaveMill™ WSE Type for sale as of December 2021.

Aircraft bodies and jet engine parts use aluminum alloys, nickel-based heat-resistant alloys, titanium alloys and so on. In particular, the titanium alloys widely used in aircraft structural components have low thermal conductivity and high strength at high temperatures, generating high cutting heat and large machining loads during cutting and thus rendering high-efficiency machining difficult. Therefore, there is a need for tools with both excellent sharpness and strength to suppress cutting heat. In addition, ramping is often used to improve machining efficiency for such structural components, requiring tools capable of machining at large ramp angles.

In response to these needs, our company has developed the "SEC-WaveMill™ WSE Type". With an optimised insert cutting edge design and high-precision insert molding technology, the SEC-WaveMill™ WSE Type realises high-efficiency machining and stable long tool life in titanium alloy machining. In addition, machining at double the ramping angle of general-purpose shoulder milling cutters is possible. Newly developed milling insert grades ACS2500/ACS3000 (for exotic alloy machining) realises excellent stability and longer tool life.

1. Features

Ideal for machining of titanium alloy aerospace components
A selection of corner radius lineup suited for various titanium structural component applications involving large ramping angles.

High efficiency milling with long and stable tool life
Combination of an optimised cutting edge shape together with the newly developed ACS2500/ACS3000 grades (for exotic alloy machining) achieve both excellent wear resistance and fracture resistance.

Optimised cutting edge shape and chip pocket for excellent chip evacuation
In addition to the cutting edge shape that controls the shape of the chips when machining at large ramping angles, the chip pocket on the cutter body is optimised to achieve excellent chip control.
