Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (headquarters: Chuo-ku, Osaka, President: Osamu Inoue, hereafter "our company") has developed a CBN Grade "SUMIBORONTM BN7125" for high-efficiency machining of cast iron and sintered alloy, launched for sales as of July 2023.

SUMIBORONTM is a CBN material composed of CBN (cubic boron nitride), with hardness second only to diamond, sintered with a binder under high pressure and high temperature. As a tool material capable of high-efficiency machining of hardened steel used in automotive components, cast iron, sintered alloy and so on, its application range in cutting has been expanded.

Along with high dimensional tolerance and surface quality, higher productivity is now a requirement in machining of the cast iron and sintered alloy used in essential components for automobiles, construction machinery, etc., leading to higher load on tool cutting edges and as such, tool materials that are tougher and have longer tool life are required.

In response to these needs, we have newly developed a CBN grade for high efficiency machining SUMIBORONTM BN7125, in addition to the currently available BN7115 for sintered alloy finishing, which balances excellent wear resistance and fracture resistance while realising stable performance in high-speed machining of cast iron and sintered alloy.

SUMIBORONTM BN7125 is a general-purpose grade for high-efficiency machining, which balances high-levels of wear resistance and fracture resistance with its improved CBN particle binding strength, from using a proprietary binder and sintering process. Provides stable long tool life in high-speed milling and turning of cast iron and sintered alloy.
